In War's Wake: The Aftermath of Iraq and Afghanistan

 

The Homecoming Project proudly presents In War's Wake: The Aftermath of Iraq and Afghanistan, a photography exhibition examining war and the effects of combat trauma on US Service Members and Veterans as they return home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Over 30 award-winning photojournalists' works are featured in the show with the creative written works and photography of Austin's Veterans. The exhibition will open May 18 and will be available for viewing through May 30.     

* Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public.  *Admission to the Artist Talk and Panel Discussion is $10 per person. Tickets are available for purchase online and at the door.  (*Free admission for service members, veterans, and their family if present ID card at door - veterans must still register to reserve a seat.)

Opening night, Saturday May 18th:

6-7pm:  Opening of exhibit and Photography Preview (Open to the public) 

7-8:30 PM:  Artist Lecture by Ashley Gilbertson, followed by a panel discussion of Austin's leading voices in the veteran community, including photojournalist Ashley Gilbertson, photojournalist Erin Trieb, Hope for Heroes Director and veteran Sean Hanna, Team leader of the Austin PTSD Clinical Team at the VA Dr. Sharon Wills, and veteran activist and photographer Andrew Wade Nunn. 

Panelists will discuss topics such as war and combat, challenges facing today's veterans, the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and positive solutions in the veteran community - the discussion will be followed by a Q&A session.  

8:30 - 10 PM:  Gallery Opening and Reception   

The Homecoming Project  will also be hosting StoryCorps at The Dougherty Center  May 15 - May 17th.  Military families and veterans are welcome to join StoryCorps as they conduct their "Military Voices Initiative" program.  Veterans can sign up to have their stories recorded by StoryCorps, who will provide them with a free copy of the recording and archive their story in the Library of Congress.  To sign up with StoryCorps, contact info@thehomecomingproject.org.  More information can be found at http://storycorps.org/initiatives/military-voices-initiative/  

Photojournalist Erin Trieb is a native of Dallas, Texas who is based in Austin.  Since 2009 she has documented service members in Afghanistan and as they return home, and is the director of The Homecoming Project.  The exhibition was curated by Erin Trieb, Pentagram partner DJ Stout and Texas Monthly's Director of Photography Leslie Baldwin; Co-curators are veterans Joseph Bullard and Andrew Wade Nunn.
