Digital Forensics – Preserving Evidence The Right Way

Someone is stealing from our company – now what?  When a fraud hits an organization, it is critical that evidence is properly maintained and the chain of custody preserved so that the event can be properly investigated and resolved.  Many organizations do not have a formal plan for how they will deal with this type of issue, but it is never too late to start thinking about how to prepare the organization to address this type of risk.

The Chicago Chapter of RMA is pleased to have Sean Renshaw, Director at RSM, present to us the best practices for preserving critical digital evidence.  His discussion will include details on how a digital forensic analysis is performed and how key evidence is maintained during an investigation.

Sean is the national leader of the digital forensics and incident response (DFIR) practice. His teamsupports global operations for cybercrime and data breach investigations, digital forensics and incidentresponse services within the security, privacy, and risk consulting group. Sean has over 28 years of experience leading and conducting investigations, and serving as an expert witness throughout the U.S.and globally, in civil and criminal matters in both federal and state courts. He has provided testimony in reports, depositions and before triers of fact extensively in his career.

Due to his extensive law enforcement and investigative experience, he frequently handles sensitive, complex matters, such as fraud and embezzlement, regulatory agency inquiries, Foreign CorruptPractices Act (FCPA) investigations, investigations led by boards of directors, theft of intellectual property, executive employment disputes and other matters. In addition to his significant investigative background,Sean is a highly trained digital forensic expert who has handled a number of highly sensitive and complex investigations involving digital evidence.

Sean's tenure as a senior special agent in the Office of Inivestigations for the U.S. Customs Service spanned over 12 yars.  In this role, he conducted investigations relating to illegal exportation of high technology and munitions, money laundering, commercial fraud perpetrated by multinational corporations and illegal importation of counterfeit pharmaceuticals.
