Essential Elements of a Credit Presentation

Seminar Description

Every loan or credit presentation written in a bank for the purpose of initial approval, renewal, or periodic review tells a story.  Well told stories have a beginning, a developed plot and a clear ending.

Too often the loan presentation format used in a bank was developed piecemeal over a long period of time without complete thought being given to creating a fully informative, organized presentation.

Your loan presentations are the “window” into your underwriting and credit risk administration.  Loan presentations that lack focus, ignore crucial factors or that are incomplete, leave a negative impression about your credit risk management.  Once that impression is created, it can be difficult to change.   This is particularly important in a regulatory environment where examiners are highly focused on the lender credit risk process.

The Wisconsin State RMA Chapter is pleased to present a one day work shop on the Essential Elements of Credit Presentations.  Topics covered will include:

  • Who is the “audience” for a loan presentation?  What are their needs?
  • What can be the end result of inadequate loan presentations, and why they be more than you think
  • Major elements of a loan presentation and their order of presentation.
  • Data orientation or narrative orientation; pros and cons
  • Detailing the loan purpose and what not to say
  • What do we need to know about borrower management?
  • Incomplete financial analysis, based on a recitation of obvious information
  • What to look for in projections
  • Common short comings in cash flow analysis
  • Failure to provide complete analysis of guarantors
  • Identifying the loan structure and sources of repayment.  How are these related?
  • Clear identification of the basis for the loan’s risk rating
  • Incorporating industry and competitive information
  • How to effectively “tell the story”.

The objective of this course is to provide informative, practical information related to the creation of more effective written loan presentations.

Included in the material will be case studies and examples.
