FRIDAY, March 6th, 9:30 am-5pm

The Use of Art, Play, and other Expressive Therapies for Assessment of Children

Presenter: Eliana Gil, Ph.D., RPT-S, ATR

Workshop Description
The goal of this workshop is to provide participants with information about how to select and administer art and play therapy assessment tools in order to augment their understanding of the child’s inner world and evaluate overall functioning, developmental status, verbal and nonverbal communication, and behavioral symptoms that might suggest underlying needs.  Play therapists will practice skills such as “holding interpretations,” crafting amplification questions, and inviting children to amplify metaphors in order to assist them in their abilities to externalize, project, and manage their concerns, thus achieving mastery and control. This workshop will help play therapists gather data from a variety of sources to highlight how play therapists can help children “show or tell” what’s on their minds and respond accordingly in order to solidify a trusting relationship.

Learning Objectives:
After the session, participants will be able to:

1.  List three art therapy activities that play therapists can use to produce relevant assessment information

2.  Name two ways that play therapists can process art that respect children’s defenses

3.  Define the term “amplification questions/comments” and state two reasons that play therapists should develop this skill set.

4.  List two ways that play therapists can use language when writing clinical assessment reports

5.  List two ways play therapists might consider transferring play themes to other media

6.  Specify the language that play therapists can use to encourage children to communicate in a variety of expressive ways

7.  List two ways that play therapists can understand symptomatic behavior

8.  Besides art activities, list three other assessment domains that can assist play therapists in conducting a comprehensive assessment
