Self Care as Revolutionary Action: Nurturing POC Strength

This morning training is only for people of color

Featuring: Marina Barcelo, MSW, MA & Dr. Gita Mehrotra, MSW, PhD.

When:  8:30am-12:00pm (registration starts at 8:00)

Purpose

This session will create a space for people of color who are navigating institutions to focus on the necessity of engaging in self-care and community care as revolutionary action. Through interactive dialogue, participants will discuss the strengths and limitations of the concept of "self-care", explore ideas of vicarious resilience and community care, and address issues of trauma exposure and healing justice. Participants will move beyond “the bubble bath,” and generate strategies for navigating intersectional identities and nurturing the personal and the political within our current context.

Advocacy for Equity: Building Allyship toward Social Change

Featuring: Eddie May, MSW, LCSW and Dr. Gita Mehrotra MSW, PhD.

When: 1:00pm – 4:30pm (registration starts at 12:30pm)

Purpose

This workshop will explore the impact of power, privilege, identity, and oppression in our practice with a specific focus on what it means to build allyship and solidarity across differences to further equity in our work.  We will explore issues of social identity, oppression, and equity and critically consider what we mean by “allyship” and solidarity in the context of social justice work.  Workshop participants will have the opportunity to explore their own intersectional identities and discuss the concept of allyship within shared identity caucus groups. Facilitated group exercises will then expand skills and strategies for effective coalition-building, allyship, and solidarity work across different social locations.

Eddie May, MSW, LCSW

Eddie May, LCSW, holds an MSW from Tulane University and a BE in Family and Human Services/Women and Gender Studies from the University of Oregon. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Practice in the MSW program at Portland State University’s School of Social Work where he teaches in the Advanced Clinical Concentration. His clinical practice experience has focused on therapeutic interventions with children and adolescents experiencing trauma, LGBTQ affirming practice, crisis mental health, and existential narrative approaches. Eddie's passion lies in equity and inclusion work and the intersection of micro and macro practice. He believes focus on implicit/explicit bias and socialization is critical in clinical practice and the unpacking of each knapsack carried in our day to day.
