Finger Lakes Regional Stream Monitoring Network Training
Learn how your local stream can become your outdoor classroom! The Finger Lakes Institute (FLI) and Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (FL-PRISM) at Hobart and William Smith Colleges are hosting a teacher training for the Finger Lakes Regional Stream Monitoring Network (FLRSMN) with partners Delta Environmental and Finger Lakes Community College. Participants will learn the importance of monitoring water quality of streams; will learn about invasive species that can be found in streams and the riparian corridor (NEW!); will practice using the FLRSMN sampling protocols and techniques at a local stream; will practice entering/retrieving stream data using the FLRSMN database; and will learn the importance of engaging students as citizen scientists in water quality monitoring. Science teachers for grades 6-12 and environmental outreach educators are encouraged to participate in this training.
Participants will recieve 5.5 hours of CTLE credits from Hobart and William Smith Colleges for this workshop, a FLRSMN teacher manual and classroom-based activities to pre-teach macroinvertebrate ID skills. Upon completion of this training, teachers will be eligible to sign out (for FREE) FLRSMN monitoring kits for classroom use and are invited to share their monitoring results at the 2019 FLI Science Fair held in May.
A portion of this training will take place outside at a stream location near the Finger Lakes Institute. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather (rain or shine) and bring rubber boots or sneakers to get into the water.

8:00-8:30 am - Welcome and Introductions
8:30-9:00 am - Water Quality of Finger Lakes Streams and Intro to FLRSMN Program
9:00-9:45 am- Invasive Species in the Stream and Riparian Corridor (ID with Samples)
10:00-12:30 pm Stream Monitoring at Local Stream
12:30-1:00 pm Working Lunch (provided)- FLRSMN database
1:00-1:30 pm - Practice Entering/Retrieving Data Using the FLRSMN database
1:30 pm - Stream Monitoring Kit Sign-Out/Wrap-up
