Indianapolis Chapter CSI and AIA February 2016 Meeting: 360 Market Square

Joe Burnell, with CallisonRTKL, inc., will be discussing the 360 Market Square project. 360 Market Square is sited on the northern end of the former Market Square Arena property.  Adjacent to the bustling City Market and recently completed Indianapolis Cultural Trail, the building defines a formal street edge on all four sides of its site providing mingling and outdoor dining space for both shoppers and residents alike.

Encouraging more foot traffic and pedestrian interaction eastward from historic Monument Circle, 360 Market Street reestablishes the city grid and helps redefine Market Street as a main arterial.  By providing badly needed green spaces in an urban heat island, the building also helps to energize the emerging downtown core.

Through its organic allantoid shape inspired by natural precedents, 360 Market Square challenges currently accepted residential high rise stereotypes. Oriented with the short, curved side facing west for general energy conservation, the curved surfaces also result in a larger volume of building enclosed within less surface area, additionally yielding a material savings and reduced energy costs.

Offering 293 luxury apartments, a gourmet grocery store with added retail users, both public and private parking, and full-service residential amenities, the dynamic 27 story concrete and glass residential tower is enhanced through the use of varying glass colors to create a sense of visual weaving on the exterior façade.

Two large outdoor green roofs augment residential amenity spaces at both the intermediate terrace level, and also at the rooftop terrace located atop the residential tower. The latter is given prominence by its large ‘sky window’, framing views of downtown Indianapolis and the surrounding landscape beyond, while also serving to create an iconic new expression on the Indianapolis skyline.
