Description:

The American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard Upgrade course is perfect for those who possess a current lifeguard certification and would like to work in Class I open-water environments such as non-surf waterfronts, natural spring fed swimming pools, lakes, and/or rivers. The course teaches how to prevent and respond to waterfront emergencies, open water patron surveillance, rescue board techniques, water rescues utilizing boats and kayaks, search and rescue techniques, emergency preparedness, and more.

Prerequisites:

Lifeguarding and CPR/AED for Pro Rescuer skills competency exams. You must bring copies of current American Red Cross Certifications in Lifeguard/First Aid and CPR/AED for Lifeguards.

Swim Test:

  1. Swim 550 yards (about 500 meters) continuously.
  2. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7–10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
  3. Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4–7 feet of water, resurface and swim 5 yards to the side of the pool.

Successful completion of this course will result in new certifications in Lifeguarding/Waterfront Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
