The Rev. Dr. Martha Horne was dean and president of the Virginia Theological Seminary and the first woman elected president of an Episcopal seminary. She has been an ordained priest for 32 years. We welcome her for this evening in honor of the late Rev. Robert Farrar Capon, Dean of Mercer School of Theology.
Martha Horne was Dean and President of the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, VA from 1994-2007, following eight years as a faculty member and an associate dean. The first woman elected president of an Episcopal seminary, Martha has been an ordained Episcopal priest for 33 years and was a parish priest on the staffs of Christ Church, Alexandria and St. Andrew’s, Burke, before joining the VTS faculty in 1986. A former member of the board of the Association of Theological Schools in the U.S. and Canada, Martha served as president from 2000-2002.
Since retiring from VTS, Martha was Dean of ATS Presidential Leadership programs from 2008-2014 and continues to work with ATS staff to plan and facilitate conferences for presidents and boards of theological schools. She is a resource consultant and member of the Board of Directors of the In CnTrust Center for Theological Schools.
Martha is Vice-chair of the Washington National Cathedral Chapter (governing board) and recently served as co-chair of the search committee for the new Dean. She is a conference leader for CREDO, a national clergy wellness initiative of the Episcopal Church Pension Group, and recently served as Chair of the Episcopal Church Commission on Impairment and Leadership.
Martha is married to McDonald K. Horne, III a retired physician and proud to be the mother of son Peter and grandson Ansel.
