Self-Study Course in Episcopal Church Law

“Blessed are you, O Lord, instruct me in your statutes.”

Psalm 119:12

As well as by God’s Law, our work  in the Church is constrained and governed by a web of religious and secular law.  For Episcopalians there are the bodies of canon law, both national and diocesan, as well as federal, state, and local ordinances and laws.  When these statutes intersect, the result can be confusion and  uncertainty.

To support clergy, attorneys and laity serving in the Diocese of Long Island, the Mercer School is offering a Self Study course:

CHURCH LAW: Polity, Law and the Episcopal Church

In this course the student will be exposed to the interplay of law and theology, the role of “law” in the church, the development of the church’s canonical tradition, and an examination of the structures and canons of this church as established by General Convention and through the lived experience of the constitution and canons of the Diocese of Long Island.  In addition, we will consider the intersection of “Episcopal church law” with the varieties of secular law.
