The train depot, owned by Sarasota County, is the only surviving passenger station in the County. It was built in 1927 and renovated in 2002-2003, was central to the founding and development of Venice, Florida. Since November 12, 2003, a cadre of trained docents from the Venice Area Historical Society (VAHS) has provided tours of the Depot building and campus to visitors from around the world. This one-hour tour starts in the waiting room were on display are informative panels and exhibits developed by VAHS, illustrating both Venice history and Depot history. It is an interesting and entertaining story highlighting the five important themes of this city. The presence of VAHS at the Depot is a major effort in preserving and celebrating the Depot’s history and its historically significant architecture. Complimentary.
