Feed efficiency and residual feed intake: Why they matter? (1:00 – 1:45 pm)
          Dr. Hannah Hollinger, Assistant Professor, UW Animal Science Department

           Dr. Whit Stewart, UW Assistant Professor- Extension Sheep Specialist
Dr. Hannah Hollinger-Hollinger will discuss how feed efficiency is measured using different techniques, heritability, how it relates to other traits we select for, and the dollars & cents of why it matters. A hands-on phenotypic evaluation of highly efficient and lowly efficient rams will be a part of the discussion to incorporate visual evaluation with ram test data.

Wool Workshop  - Ben Hostetler and Whit Stewart (1:45 – 2:30 pm)

Mastitis in Sheep: Economic Implications to management considerations (2:30 – 4 pm)

This interactive discussion will highlight the production consequences of clinical and subclinical mastitis, Indurative mastitis "Hard Bag". Discussion will include production losses, effects of udder and teat structure, environmental effects, effects of trace minerals on prevention, and treatment strategies. A hands-on exercise using study ewes from 2019 Zn-mastitis study will be used to provide examples for growers to practice evaluation (cull-keep) strategies. Producers will be able to compare udders from ewes with varying histories of mastitis from their first lactation.

Resistance to de-wormers is occurring at rapid rates nationally and internationally. Thus, selective de-wormer using the FAMACHA system where sheep are selected for treatment based on the degree of anaemia they are displaying in their mucous membranes. In turn, the degree of anaemia is assessed through a color guided chart. This quick and easy diagnostic tool can help aid de-worming decision making. Participants will practice on sheep and be provided a FAMACHA card at the end of the training for on-ranch use.
