Simple Steps to Starting a Business - Cycle "E" - Sept. 13 to Oct. 11, 2017 - in Lancaster, PA 

Simple Steps is a comprehensive series of programs offered by SCORE with the simple intent to assist and equip you with the tools you will need to develop a bankable business plan and grow your business. The program will consist of five modules: See detailed descriptions of each session below.

Who should attend?

Participants considering starting a business or buying a business or a small business owner that wants to learn how to evaluate new business ideas.

SS1 Starting a Business
The first workshop in the Simple Steps series is an introduction to what you need to know to start a business or run a new business. You will do a self-assessment to determine whether you are prepared to be an entrepreneur.

You will receive valuable information on:
- Start up Myths and facts
- Self Assessment...are you an entrepreneur
- Legal structures
- Licensing and taxes
- How to establish a legal name
- Introduction to book keeping basics
- Introduction to Marketing and Finance

SS2 Business Concepts
The second workshop in the Simple Steps series focuses on business concepts and data collection. This workshop includes discussions about a feasibility plan, your business idea, your business concept, your business model and your collection of core information to create a professional and viable business plan.

You will learn valuable information on:

- Developing your business concept
- Elements of a Business Plan
- How and where to collect the information to complete a Business Plan
- Identifying customers and competitors

SS3 Marketing
The third workshop in the Simple Steps series focuses on marketing, which includes discussions about pricing strategy, competition, target markets, marketing strategies to reach customers, how to identify key demographics, buying habits and behaviors of consumers, market size and realistic penetration, business to business (B2B) and business to consumer (B2C) strategies and costs elements as related to marketing choices.
 
You will learn how to:

- Define your product or service € and the benefits they provide.
- Define and target your customer € and the benefit you provide to them.
- Differentiate your product or service
- Promote your product or service
- Place your product in the marketplace (retail store, website, mail order, etc.)

SS4 Financial Projections
The fourth workshop in the Simple Steps series focuses on the financial aspects. This lecture includes discussions on forecasting sales units and prices, financial risks and rewards, what are your true start-up costs, ongoing operating expenses, a modeling tool that helps you evaluate variable factors, setting benchmarks for tracking progress and the organization of all your financial information.

You will learn how to create:

- A Forecast of revenue and expenses
- A Cash Flow Statement
- A Balance Sheet
- A Profit and Loss Statement
- A Break Even Analysis
- Benchmarks for your company compared to industry norms
- And to use an on-line financial spreadsheet

SS5 Funding / Financing
The final workshop in the Simple Steps Series deals with financing your business. The discussions will include sources of funds, financial statement analysis, accounting and bookkeeping systems, the six C's of credit, banking relations, ratio analysis, monthly preparation and review of financial statements. A bank loan officer will give an inside view of how a banker assesses the merits of business plans and loan application.

- Sources of Capital
- How to relate to your banker (a discussion with a banker)
