Underwater Surveillance Systems and the Impact on Lifeguard Surveillance at Peter Hemingway Fitness & Leisure Centre (11:00am - 12:00pm)
Rob Campbell, Supervisor of Aquatic Strategies, City of Edmonton

Rob Campbell will provide insight and share his learning's regarding the implementation of underwater camera surveillance technology and its effect on lifeguard supervision systems.

Drowning prevention technology is emerging and a variety of systems utilizing cameras and sensors have been developed and installed in pools across North America. Underwater camera surveillance systems have the ability to monitor bather activity and track bather movement.

In 2017 the City of Edmonton installed underwater cameras at Peter Hemingway Fitness & Leisure Centre. Cameras were installed in strategic areas of the facility to assist lifeguards with bather surveillance. This presentation will address how this surveillance system has impacted the lifeguards and the facility’s safety and supervision systems.

Lunch & Networking (12:00pm - 1:00pm)

Lunch will be provided.

Air Quality - Indoor and Outdoor Facilities  (1:00pm-2:00pm)
Dominic Ries, CHS, CPO, LEED Green Associate

Dominic Ries will share his experience in the field of Aquatic facility design and the challenges in maintaining adequate air quality for both indoor and outdoor pools. Chloramines are a known respiratory health hazard for swimmers, lifeguards, and other pool occupants. Chloramines can fill an entire pool space but tend to concentrate directly above the pool water surface, right where swimmers breathe.

Wildfire smoke is also a common, seasonal health hazard during the spring, summer and autumn months that can be a hazard for people who work at or visit aquatic facilities. It is crucial when planning construction or renovations that air delivery is considered.

In this presentation Dominic will walk us through basic HVAC terminology and explain how this system can affect your air quality. In addition, he will bust common misconceptions and give pool operators various solutions on how they can improve air quality at their facilities.

Public Aquatic Facility Safety Standards Update (2:00- 3:00pm)
Rachel Baird, Aquatic Safety and Standards Manager, Lifesaving Society

Rachel Baird will highlight the key up-dates to the Lifesaving Society’s Public Aquatic Safety Standards since its last publication in 2014 and the Standards Journal since its last publication in 2012.

The Lifesaving Society’s Public Aquatic Safety Standards are Recreation Professionals source of information about how to provide a safe environment in areas where the provincial Swimming Pool regulations and standards are silent. The Lifesaving Society has developed and published these standards to educate pool owners and owner’s agents on how to optimize safety in public aquatic facilities.

The Lifesaving Society publishes the aquatic safety Standards Journal to assist recreation professionals in the safe operation of aquatic facilities. The Standards Journal combines aquatic safety related legal reports and recommendations, and Lifesaving Society positions on safety issues relevant to the owners and operators of aquatic facilities. The intent of these documents is to enhance the safety of swimmers and reduce the risk of incidents in the facility
