About Mahogany L. Browne

Mahogany L. Browne is a California born, Brooklyn based writer, educator, activist, mentor, and curator. She is co-editor of The BreakBeat Poets Volume 2: Black Girl Magic (Haymarket Books, 2018) and author of several poetry collections and chapbooks, including Black Girl Magic (Roaring Brook Press/Macmillan, 2018). Her work has appeared in pluck!, The Manhattanville Review, Muzzle, The Quarry: A Social Justice Poetry Database, and others. She has been featured on the PBS NewsHour segment Brief But Spectacular reading her poem “Black Girl Magic” and on HBO’s Brave New Voices as the artistic director at Urban Word NYC. Browne is the publisher of Penmanship Books, curator of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe Friday Night Slam, founder of the Women Writers of Color Reading Room, and the Director of Black Lives Matter at Pratt Institute. A Cave Canem Fellow and an Agnes Gund Fund Recipient, Browne has toured internationally as a member of Global Poetics, an international arts exchange. Visit her website for more info.

 

About the DC Youth Slam Team

Split This Rock's award-winning DC Youth Slam Team uses poetry to teach and empower teens from the DC metropolitan area to speak up about issues of social justice. Annually, through a series of performance poetry competitions, called slams, held throughout the city, Split This Rock selects a team of youth between the ages of 13 and 19 to serve as ambassadors for Split This Rock and the DC metro area. Members of the DCYST are coached on writing and performance; speak out on social issues; serve as leaders within Split This Rock Youth Programs; participate in youth poetry gatherings such as Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival where the team took 1st place in 2014; and travel to perform regionally, nationally, and periodically abroad.
