Rev. Dr. Ken Tanaka will discuss his newest books,

Jewels, and Buddhism On Air.


Panel Discussion:

"Engaged Buddhism for Our Personal and Social Lives"

An integenerational panel will join Rev. Dr. Tanaka is

discussing this topic from their personal perspectives.

  

 

Sterling Makishima  (Mountain View) grew up in the Mountain View Buddhist Temple, attending Dharma School, serving as YBA president in the 1960s, and currently serves as the board president. He has also been active with the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin.  In addition to being a grandparent, he has engaged his Shin Buddhist teachings through involvement in projects including: the Tadaima LGBTQ Townhall Meeting,  MVBT Interfaith Exchange, MVBT Compassionate Conversation/Mindful Action townhall meeting for temple members and community.


 


Sumi Tanabe  (San Jose) been active in various Buddhist Churches of America (BCA) leadership positions over the course of 21 years, including: National Board member - Vice President for 3 terms; BCA Endowment Foundation - Board of Trustees for over 25 years, and currently the only women director; first woman president at SJ Buddhist Church Betsuin; past president of the Federation of Buddhist Womens Associations (FBWA). She is also involved with the Santa Clara County Interfaith Reponse to Elder Abuse; has served as a volunteer with the Stanford Hospital Spiritual Care Program; and is actively supportive of programs for the homeless. 


 


Steve Tamekuni (Technobuddha) grew up in San Jose and attended San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin. He was very active at church, participating in judo, Cub and Boy Scouts, Jr. YBA and attending service/dharma school every Sunday. When he moved back to the Bay Area after college, he found it difficult to be as active at church, but discovering the TechnoBuddha conference changed that. He now attends and helps organize the annual conference ever year. Steve works as a user experience designer in Pleasanton. 


 


Kimberly Koga Kim (Technobuddha) grew up in Central California, active with the Parlier Buddhist Church throughout her youth. She returns home every year to help her family and community during Parlier's Obon. She has been a participant and served on the planning committee for the annual TechnoBuddha conference, which helps to engage and connect young adults interested in Buddhism and Jodo Shinshu through a variety of educational, cultural and social activities. Kim works in San Jose in corporate finance.

Rev. Kenneth Kenshin Tanaka, Ph.D.

     Ken Tanaka grew up in Mt. View and attended the Mt. View Buddhist Temple. He was an active member of the Young Buddhist Association at the local, district and national levels. After attending the 1969 Summer Session at the Institute of Buddhist Studies (IBS), he made the decision to pursue a career in Buddhism. 

     After graduating from Stanford University with a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology, he specialized in the study of Buddhism at various institutions that included a stint as Theravada monk in Thailand, then as graduate student at the Institute of Buddhist Studies (M.A.), Tokyo University (M.A.), and Univ. of California at Berkeley (Ph.D.). He taught at IBS for 11 years (1984-95) and served as minister at Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church for 3 years (1995-98). 

     Rev. Dr. Tanaka is currently Professor and Director of the Institute of Buddhist Culture at Musashino University in Tokyo, a Jodo-Shinshu based institution of about 10,000 students. He also serves as President of two academic associations, the Int. Assoc. of Shin Buddhist Studies and the Japanese Assoc. for the Study of Buddhism and Psychology. 

     His publications include The Dawn of Chinese Pure Land Buddhist Doctrine (The State Univ. of New York Press, 1990), Ocean: An Introduction to Jodo Shinshu Buddhism in America (Wisdom Ocean Publications, 1997), The Faces of Buddhism in America (co-editor) (Univ. of California Press, 1998), and Amerika bukkyo (in Japanese, meaning “American Buddhism”) (Musashino University, 2010). His books have been translated into Japanese, Chinese, and Portuguese.

     Dr. Tanaka is married to Kimie Carrie Tanaka; they have three adult children, Aaron (Boston), Nathan (El Cerrito), and Serena (San Francisco). His interests include walking, feeding the neighborhood stray cats, looking for humor in Buddhism, and watching the news!
