WINTER PACIFIC SEMINAR - 21ST CENTURY
"Fushidan Sekkyo"
Dharma Talks & Story-Telling in Jodo Shinshu
In Japan, Jodo Shinshu priests often delivered Dharma messages in the form of fushidan sekkyo, which featured artistic, often comical, forms of story-telling. Dr. Mark Blum, keynote speaker for the 2020 Winter Pacific Seminar, will discuss this style of preaching and explain how, like rakugo ("fallen words"), a similar form of Japanese performance art, it is gaining in popularity today.
The Institute of Buddhist Studies (IBS) and the BCA Center for Buddhist Education will present the 2020 Winter Pacific Seminar on Saturday, January 25, 2020, 9:30 am - 3:30 pm (doors open at 9 am), at the Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji in LA, located at 815 E. First Street, Los Angeles, CA.
The theme this year is: "Fushidan Sekkyo: Dharma Talks & Story-telling in Jodo Shinshu," with keynote speaker, Dr. Mark Blum. He will present his talk in English and Japanese (2 separate sessions).
Dr. Mark L. Blum is a Buddhist Studies Professor and Shinjo Ito Distinguished Chair in Japanese Studies in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of The Origins and Development of Pure Land Buddhism (2002), co-editor of Rennyo and the Roots of Modern Japanese Buddhism (2006) and Cultivating Spirituality: a modern Shin Buddhist anthology (2011) and author of other works. He is currently working on completing Think Buddha, Say Buddha: a history of nenbutsu thought, practice and culture.
In addition to the keynote lecture, the seminar will feature a Dharmathon, a series of short dharma talks by a number of the BCA Southern District Ministers. They will also explore the theme of story-telling in their talks. Two sessions will be presented, one in English and another in Japanese.
The registration deadline is January 11, 2020. Please see the registration links above or contact Rev. Koho Takata at NishiDharmaCenter@gmail.com or call (213) 680-9130.
