What is a GS Vacation?
A GS Vacation is like a short “summer camp” for High School students, sponsored by Communion and Liberation. Communion & Liberation (CL) is an international Catholic movement, made up of lay people, priests and religious of all ages. It was founded in Italy by Msgr. Luigi Giussani some 50 years ago.
Monsignor Giussani did not intend to found one of the world’s largest Catholic lay movements in the Church today. He was a high school religion teacher whose teaching profoundly touched many of his students. In just a few years, thousands of high school and colleged students were involved in “Gioventu’ Studentesca” (“young people who are students”). For this reason, even here in the US, the high school part of CL is still affectionately known as “GS.” In the early 1980s—at the request of John Paul II—CL began to move outside of Italy, growing on every continent and in more than 70 nations over the past 30 years. Here in New York John Cardinal O’Connor asked that CL come to the Archdiocese. Since then, CL has grown here in New York and has spread throughout more than 40 states in the US. In the US, CL continues to work with both high school and university students nationwide. Legally, CL is represented by a non-profit organization, “The Human Adventure Corporation” and its offices are at 125 Maiden Lane, New York, NY 10038. CL is not affiliated officially or unofficially with any high school and all trips are sponsored exclusively by CL and the Human Adventure Corporation.
