Creating an Ideal Surgical Workspace with Light
1st of 2 Courses| 11:00 AM – 12:00 | In person | Free

There is no more critical space where proper lighting directly impacts health and life than in a surgical suite. This criticality can be seen in the attention given to lighting specifications and recommended practices from multiple stakeholders. Bringing it all together is a difficult task. This course will identify issues and concerns and provide clear direction regarding fixture feature selection and use.

This is an intermediate course where prior knowledge of lighting metrics and fixture general terms are well understood. Some experience with lighting calculation software is helpful but not required.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the lighting requirements and metrics of a surgical suite.
  • Learn how to adapt the lighting system to address physiological visual deficiencies inherent to surgical procedures to improve acuity, reduce eye strain and fatigue of the surgical team to provide better outcomes for patients.
  • Understand new medical technologies impact on the surgical lighting system. Identify the unexpected hazards created by the new technology and ways to avoid potential interference the lighting system may introduce.
  • Identify the non-visual impact of the lighting system and the role it can play in protecting patient health and outcomes
