Windows and Historic Homes: Repair, Replace and New Additions

Windows are character-defining features of homes. Working with homeowners to advise them on the best course of action takes knowledge of window construction, conditions assessment, local historic district regulation, energy savings, and cost management. This course will explore residential window options for properties in and outside historic districts. The standards and guidelines from the Secretary of Interior will be introduced and reviewed for their influence on residential projects. A list of the various aspects of window replacement homeowners and architects need to balance will be considered and reviewed. Case studies will be shared to demonstrate how factors of rehabilitation and window replacement apply to residential historic projects.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify research, planning and preparation needed for historic rehabilitation
  • Evaluate conditions of the windows and the overall project goals to inform decisions to repair or replace.
  • Formulate best solution if windows are to be replaced.
  • Apply lessons learns from case studies where standards and guidelines were followed.

Exterior Glass Doors: Improve Function, Performance and Well Being in Residential Design

Single family residential home design no longer relies solely windows to bring daylight, views, and fresh air into the home. The use of exterior glass doors change the experience of the homeowner by contributing to healthier, more appealing spaces and strengthening the connection between indoors and out. These types of doors give architects almost unlimited design and performance choices. This course looks at the variety of exterior glass doors available, their design characteristics, performance considerations, and how they can impact well-being for residential customers. 

Prerequisite Knowledge
General residential design and construction methodology.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify some of the current trends inspiring single family residential designs to incorporate the use of swinging and sliding exterior glass doors
  • Investigate options and opportunities to design residences that allow for flexibility, openness, and wellness
  • Recognize the features of manufactured swinging and sliding exterior glass doors that impact their performance and how to select options to fit performance needs
  • Consider the ways in which the functional elements of large swinging and sliding exterior glass doors can contribute to healthy living and wellness
