This program is funded in part by the Willliam B. and Sylvia A. Hunsberger Fund

The inheritance of family substance use disorders is often a combination of genetic factors and environmental circumstances. It can be a destructive force in families and makes recovery difficult for the individual. The focus of this seminar will be on the impact of family substance use, co-occurring disorders, generational views regarding the use of substances, preferences of substances by age groups, co-dependency, and the misuse of prescription and OTC medications. Assessment tools and interventions strategies will be covered.

At the conclusion of the program, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the Family Systems Theory and how it may influence generational substance use
  • Explain the various roles the substance disordered family members assume in the family system
  • Identify common co-occurring disorders among individuals who have a substance use disorder
  • Discuss differing generational views about the use of prescription drugs, over the counter medications and illicit substances
  • Identify treatment strategies for the individual and the family
