This program will provide 3 hours of continuing education in ethics, law, professional conduct and risk management to satisfy Maryland liscensure requirements.

This seminar will examine the Code of Ethics and state laws and regulations to empower clinicians to better understand how to protect themselves and their licensure status in the event of a complaint. A license to practice professionally requires adherence to professional standards as defined by Professional Boards of Examiners and by state law and regulation. Ideally, these external expectations assist providers to practice in a professional manner. Two realities however, require attention. The first: the stated purpose of professional codes of ethics and of state regulation is protecting the welfare of the public, not to assist professional providers. The second: ignorance of what ethics codes and state laws and regulations require is no defense to an allegation of sub-standard practice. A review of these external standards will serve to strengthen and protect the prized possession of a professional license to practice.

At the conclusion of the program, participants should be able to:

• Define constructive notice
• Examine the Social Work and Professional Counselor Ethics Codes
• Discuss relevant laws and regulations
• Summarize how and why the Ethics Codes and legal regulation(s) are designed to protect the public at large
• Discuss why malpractice is not a major concern but complaints to licensing Boards should be
• Explain how competence, consent, confidentiality and professional boundaries are professional hot spots
• Employ best practices to meet external standards without practicing defensively

J. Emmet Burke, PhD, JD, inpatient psychologist, Brook Lane. Dr. Burke holds a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Maryland School of Law.

Seminar Fee:  $79.00 (includes 3 Category 1 CEUs)

CANCELLATION POLICY: A $10 processing fee will apply for all cancellations. To receive a refund, cancellations must be made in writing and received no later than one week prior to the seminar. No refunds/credits will be made after the one-week date or for no shows on the day of the program.

Continuing Education Information:

This program will provide 3 hours of continuing education in ethics, law, professional conduct and risk management to satisfy Maryland liscensure requirements.

An important message about CEUs:  Brook Lane seminars are approved for continuing education credits as an entire event.  PARTIAL CREDIT WILL NOT BE AWARDED.  To assure that you receive continuing education credit, you must be on time and complete the entire seminar.

Counselors/Therapists: Brook Lane has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP TM) # 5452. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified.  Brook Lane is solely responsible for all aspects of the program. This program will provide 3 clock hours; partial credit will not be awarded.

Social Workers: Brook Lane is authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners in Maryland to sponsor social work continuing education learning activities and maintains full responsibility for this program. This training qualifies for Category 1 continuing education units and provides 3.0 credit hours; partial credit will not be awarded.   

Psychologists: The Maryland State Board of Examiners for Psychologists will accept continuing education hours provided by Brook Lane, an approved CE sponsor by the Board of Social Work Examiners in Maryland, partial credit will not be awarded.

Other Healthcare Professionals and Attendees: A certificate of completion noting the number of educational/contact hours will be provided for other disciplines to allow attendees to apply for CE credit as an individual.
