40 years of Couple Therapy:
A Personal Overview and Integration

with

Marianne Ault-Riche, LCSW

During the 20 years, I practiced Family Therapy at the Menninger Clinic, I taught an Integrated Model based on 7 schools: Structural, Strategic, Systemic, Interactional, Behavioral, Multigenerational and Object Relations. My practice of Couple Therapy was also influenced by the work of Cliff Sager and Sue Johnson as well as the feminist/multicultural critique.  More recently I have been studying EMDR,and Bill Bowen’s Psychophysical Therapy. I will discuss my journey through these schools of thought, highlighting what I find valuable and what I leave behind as well as things I wish I had understood better earlier in my career.

Marianne Ault-Riche, LCSW, has a private practice of family, couple, and individual therapy in Menlo Park.  She has taught at UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare and at the Psychiatry Residency of San Mateo County General Hospital.  Prior to moving to California in 1993, she was the Curriculum Director of the Marriage and Family therapy Program at the Menninger Clinic in Kansas, where she is licensed as both a clinical specialist social worker and a marriage and family therapist.  She has produced two educational videotapes—“Love and Work: One Woman’s Study of Her Family of Origin” and “Integrating the Personal and the Professional: A Sequel to Love and Work.”  Her 1985 book, Women and Family Therapy, was the first family therapy text on the subject of women.  In California, she has conducted workshops with Lynn Loar, LCSW, PhD and Steve Eckert, LCSW on “Humane and Strategic Interventions: Working with High Stress/ Low Resource Families.”  Marianne is the co-founder with Harriet Lerner, PhD of “Talking Straight and Fighting Fair” workshops, upon which The Dance of Anger was based.
