Mentor for a Day!

4th Annual Moving Forward Together Secondary Transition Fair 

SchoolTalk is hosting the 4th Annual Moving Forward Together Secondary Transition Community Fair for DC Youth with Disabilities on Friday, November 2nd from 10am - 2pm. 

 SchoolTalk is seeking energetic and motivated individuals to serve as mentors and work directly with DC youth during the this event. Are you an adult with a disability who would like to help be a role model for DC youth? Are you an employer who is committed to hiring a diverse staff?  Are you a community member who is interested in supporting our DC youth? Please come join us, as a Mentor for a Day. We are looking for 25 mentors.

Students will be attending a keynote speech and a workshop on the transition from high school to employment, education, and independence.  They will also be participating in a scavenger hunt, during which they will navigate through the exhibit hall and receive stamps in their “transition passports” when they interact with exhibitors and ask questions about their transition-related services. 

 Exhibitors include stakeholders that help DC youth successfully transition into post-secondary education, employment, or independence and include government agencies, colleges, employers, and community organizations. 

This is a great opportunity for you to interact with youth in the DC community and share your knowledge.  As a mentor, you will be helping guide youth through each portion of the Friday program.  Having you as a mentor is a great opportunity for youth in the DC community because it gives them the opportunity to share their experiences with you, as well as interact directly with other members of the DC community and learn about your experiences with work, education, and independence.

 Mentoring and being part of a valuable learning exchange is a great way to get involved in the DC community and impact the future of DC youth with disabilities.  If you are interested in mentoring for the day and connecting with youth with disabilities in your community, please register by Monday, October 29th, 2012.
