Recovery and Healing

Area Agency on Aging Educational Webinar - 3 CEU's

Description:

This presentation will examine the dilemma of the conversation: What causes Alcoholism and Addiction? It will focus on clarifying the distinction set forth by Alcoholics Anonymous and distinguishing from other models with which it is often confused. Relying on the "Big Book" of Alcoholics Anonymous and studying the history of the 12 Step Fellowship - based on the work of historian and scholar Ernie Kurtz - this will surely invoke interest, deepening insights and discussion for the health care professional. The 12 steps are often seen - and misunderstood - as a "self-help" strategy. This program will seek to clarify the AA vs. "modern" typological distinctions.

Objectives:

  • Relate the meaning inherent in the 12 steps and its relationship to a recovery program
  • Discuss the differentiation of the moderate, heavy and "real alcoholic" or addict as defined in the Alcoholics Anonymous literature
  • Identify characteristics of true 12 step fellowship meetings and practice how to refer a client properly to the fellowship
  • Define the internal malady that can be healed within the framework of the 12 steps and identify how this approach differs from the therapeutic one (i.e. - Spirituality and Therapy distinguished)
