Tree rings have provided an important window into the climate and forest conditions of the past. Legacy wood has the potential to improve the tree ring record and our understanding of forests, fires, climate, and human societies. These pieces of legacy wood are easily consumed in modern fires, so recognizing stumps, downed logs, architectural elements, ancient wood sites, and other pieces of old wood as legacy wood is important. In this webinar, University of Arizona researcher Josh Farella will present information on the utility of legacy wood to add to millennial scale tree ring chronologies, how to recognize legacy wood that can provide useful information, and how to connect with scientists interested in analyzing legacy wood. In addition, Marcy Reiser from University of Arizona will cover the related topic of culturally modified trees.
This webinar is part of the ArcBurn project that is designed to integrate cultural resources information into fire management decision processes. For more information about ArcBurn please visit: http://www.forestguild.org/ArcBurn.html
