Integrative Treatment of Complex PTSD and Dissociative States

A Two-day Workshop with Joanne Twombly, LICSW

Do you have clients who just aren't making progress in traditional treatment and could benefit from more effective approaches that are protective and safe to the internal system?

We are delighted to announce that Joanne Twombly, LICSW, a recognized expert in the field of complex PTSD and Dissociative, has agreed to come to New Orleans to present on that very subject. PTSD’s characteristic dissociative symptoms of numbing and intrusion vastly develop complexity when people suffer neglect, attachment disordered parenting and multiple childhood traumas. This leads to disorders on the further end of the continuum including PTSD with dissociative features, Borderline Personality Disorder, and Dissociative disorders.

Workshop participants will:

  • Get a quick, practical overview on working with complex PTSD and DDs
  • Learn integrative methods to address complex PTSD and Dissociative disorders, including: EMDR Modifications and Ego State Techniques; and Hypnotic Language
  • Review challenges such as working with suicidal and perpetrator parts
  • Learn basics of IFS through using it to deal with countertransference
  • Learn a protective, controlled protocol for processing traumatic material
  • Earn 13 CEUs

EMDR trained clinicians will learn important modifications which will add to the standard protocol, protecting clients from decompensating, and enabling EMDR to be used with this population. These techniques can be used with or without EMDR.

“Excellent presentation!  Her humility made it easy for me to learn from her.  This workshop greatly increased my awareness of dissociation and how it impacts my clients.”

“Thank you for sharing so many personal examples of yours as a therapist.”

“Great.  A lot of great learning and resources.  As I am fairly new to EMDR and IFS this gave me a structure to begin to study/train in these areas.”

“Loved her personality and delivery of material.  Provided clear explanations.  Open to questions.”

“ she's so grounded and approachable and human and solid and real and and and.... “

“I would like to share how much your work has helped my practice…”

“Used your TV/Picture in a Picture protocol with a client who’d been too afraid to process a traumatic event and we resolved it. Thanks so much.”

“I also wanted to thank you again for a really terrific training – easily one of the top several I’ve had in my 15 year clinical career.”

"Joanne's two-day workshop on Dissociative Disorders was masterful.  My colleagues and I still talk about how much our clinical repertoire grew from attending this workshop. Joanne teaches in a way that makes learning this complicated material digestible and user-friendly. She is generous with her materials and a great role model of empathy and clarity and pacing with dissociative populations."  Karen Alter-Reid, Ph.D., EMDR Trainer and Director, Psychology Seminars for Integrative Care and Treatment

“Joanne  is my go to person when I'm stuck with  a "many moving parts" clinical dilemma involving complex trauma and/or DID.  She has the rare ability to integrate conceptual frameworks, models of intervention( EMDR, IFS, Sensorimotor etc) and hands on clinical experience into a language  that  facilitates clinician and  client in an effective path forward in their work together.”  Cathleen Grant, LICSW

1. Participants will be able to identify dissociative symptoms in PTSD, Eating Disorders, dissociative disorders, and other disorders.

2. Participants will understand how developmental trauma and attachment disorders lead to PTSD and dissociative disorders.

3. Participants will be able to help clients develop collaborative treatment relationships.

What You Need to know about successful Treatment of complex PTSD and Dissociative Disorders, with EMDR and Without!

With Joanne H. Twombly, MSW, LICSW

*Abstract:

This two day workshop will provide participants with an overview for diagnosis and treatment of complex PTSD and dissociative disordered (DD) clients. Through lecture and case examples, clarification will be given on how to work effectively and safely with this population, and with clients who might not be making progress in traditional treatment. On day 1: There will be didactic presentation diagnosis, the three phases of Trauma Treatment, followed by didactic on adaptations of resources from the preparation and closure phases of EMDR to facilitate stabilization, orient DD clients to the present, and to decrease negative transferences. Participants will have the opportunity for practicums on stabilization and orienting exercises.

On Day 2: Didactic material will be presented on a protective format for processing traumatic material that can be used with or without EMDR. Following that, material will be presented on the impact of sadistic abuse, nonverbal communication and the necessity of reenactments in the treatment process. An EMDR protocol for processing ones countertransference reactions will be taught, as well as an Internal Family Systems process. Following a practicum on countertransference reactions, will be time for discussion and case consultation. This workshop is appropriate for EMDR trained clinicians as well as for clinicians with no EMDR training.

*Learning Objectives:

Attendees will be able to:

1)    Identify symptoms of dissociation and complex PTSD and be knowledgeable about diagnostic tests.

2)    Initiate ego state treatment and teach and install affect regulation strategies.

3)    Incorporate EMDR adaptations to facilitate stabilization, orient DD clients to the present, and to decrease negative transferences.

4)   Prepare client for trauma processing using a protective protocol that can be used with or without EMDR.
