*MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS - VETERANS, FAMILY PTSD Pete Sulack DC 2 HOURS
The toxic, chronic stress and physiological adaptations that result from trauma can negatively influence brain development and attachment systems, and can greatly impact individuals and societies’ health and well-being. This CE course draws on research and clinical practice to show how terror, negative emotions, and social isolation are at the core of reshaping both the brain and body. New insights into the human survival instinct explains why traumatized people experience incomprehensible and often uncontrollable anxiety, numbing (physical disassociation and medication with opioids), and excessive rage. It will also show how trauma affects theses patients’ capacity to concentrate, to remember, to form trusting relationships; and why they often develop chronic illness and disease. Informed chiropractic care can address and mitigate HPA axis dysfunction found in trauma survivors.

*OPIOD ADDICTION & OPIOD USE DISORDER Pete Sulack DC 2 HOURS
Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is quickly becoming the hottest topic in healthcare public policy. More than a third of Americans use opioids, and 11.5 million of them misuse or abuse the drug. Tragically, more than 20,000 people died in 2015 due to opioid overdose. Over a ten-year period, the opioid death rate quadrupled in direct proportion to the number of prescriptions. Currently, almost every governmental and healthcare group on the planet is working to combat this problem. Solutions range from prescription limits to equipping all first responders with Narcan™. However, the underappreciated issue (and opportunity for chiropractors) is that opioids are most frequently prescribed for chronic non-cancer pain, primarily spinal pain. Prescribing a chemical does not adequately address that problem. While the opioid crisis is disastrous, there is no greater opportunity for the Chiropractic profession to showcase our effectiveness for managing pain. Policy makers from all backgrounds are desperately searching for help in combating this epidemic, and chiropractors offer a valuable contribution toward prevention and management.
