PEDIATRIC MOBILITY SOLUTIONS: EMPOWERING PARTICIPATION FROM EXPLORATION THROUGH PROFICIENCY
Children have a natural desire to move, explore and learn.  When there is a mobility limitation these children have a limited opportunity to explore their enviornment as compared to their mobile peers and are at an increased risk for secondary delays in cognition, social and emotional development.  This course will examine the common reasons why the introduction of mobility asssistive equipment and seating solutions is delayed, resisted or not considered and review the research in support of early internvetion.   A clinical framework will be utilized to help evaluate and select the best mobillty option for the pediatric client.  This course will be also examine ways to assist the child in progressing from exploration with mobility through purposeful use of the recommended equipment.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to identify at least 5 reasons why the introduction of mobility assistive equipment is delayed, resisted or not considered and provide evidence in the research to support early intervention.
2. Participants will be able to list at least 2 condiderations and 2 concerns with the recommendation of a gait aid, manual wheelchair or power mobility device for the pediatric cilent.
3. Participants will be able to assess a child's readiness for powered mobility using a minimum of two different tools.
4. Participants will be able to design a treatment plan to progress a child from exploring to proficient use of a powered mobility device.

THE SCIENCE OF MAT EVALUATIONS AND WHEELCHAIR PRESCRIPTION
A stable and comfortable position in an appropriate wheelchair used for mobility is critical for comfort, heath, productivity, and independence.  Individualized seating and postioning systems can enhance breathing capacities, prevent complications of pressure sores, assist in decreasing pain and improve overall funcional abiities of an individual. A wheelchair evaluation is a necessary part of the process to help sort through the various characteristics of a seating system to address an individual's needs.  This course provides attendees with an overview of the wheechair evaluation process including the identification and application of seating and positioning concepts.  Attendees wil review the steps of an evaluation which include the identification of an individual's unique abilities, medical and functional needs, lifestyle and environment.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will correctly identify a minimum of 3 wheelchair seating and positioning principles in the evalutaion process.
2. Participants wil distinguish the biomechanical impact of 3 different pelvic positions on teh hips, spine and upper extremity position in the seated position.
3. Given evaluation findings, the participant wil demonstrate where 3 points of contract should be placed for stabilzation at the pelvis and trunk in teh seated position for an individual with postural deformities.
4. Given evaluation findings, the participant will be able to justify the medical need for a wheelchair seating components.

PRESENTED BY: HEATHER ROUSSEL OTR/L, ATP

Heather is a Registered Occupational Therapist with   experience working at two of the top nationally ranked rehab hospitals with specific   focus in wheelchair seating, positioning, and mobility.  Heather was first introduced   to wheelchair seating and positioning as an Exercise Physiologist when attending a wheelchair evaluation of a long time client with a spinal cord injury. She developed further interest in this niche area of therapy while working at Texas Institute for Rehabilitation & Research (TIRR Memorial Hermann) as an inpatient Occupational Therapist on the spinal cord injury team. Heather’s passion for wheelchair seating, positioning, and mobility continued to grow when accepting a specialty position at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago as their Wheelchair Skills and Management Specialist. She collaborated to developed the new program within the inpatient hospital setting, which focused on performing extensive wheelchair trials, evaluations, and instructing on advanced wheelchair skills for clients of all ages having a variety of diagnoses.
