PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
A Deaf Mentor is a deaf or hard of hearing adult that assists families in creating a supportive home environment for young children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Deaf Mentors provide help on a volunteer basis and receive stipends from ASK for their time and travel once they are accepted to the program. Deaf Mentors make regular visits to the home to interact with children who are deaf or hard of hearing, and their family members, using American Sign Language (ASL) and other types of communication supports available. Deaf Mentors also help the family understand and appreciate deafness and deaf culture. Deaf Mentors help enable the child to learn both ASL and English, as well as through other modes of communication, and to be exposed to both "hearing" and "deaf" cultures. To learn more about what a Deaf Mentor is and does, read the Deaf Mentor Job Description.
