Tax and Accounting Facts Business Owners Need to Know

You don’t need to be an accountant to run your business; but you need to know your numbers.

To stay on-top of your business, there are key tax and accounting facts which business owners and key managers must understand.

Presented by SCORE Kalamazoo/SW Michigan and the Women’s Business Center at Cornerstone Alliance; in this workshop you will learn:

  • The importance of separating your personal and business transactions; as well as the alternative methods for accounting for them.
  • The rules for filing self-employment taxes; including who must make estimated payments, when and how to file.
  • Pension options for small business owners; plus the need to build a pension plan into your business plan.
  • Payroll, insurances and related costs for employees.
  • Are you hiring an employee or independent contractor? What’s the difference and how do you assure compliance with IRS regulations?
  • Due diligence in monitoring employees and contractors for possible fraud or embezzlement.
  • Allowable deductions for rent, depreciation, automobile usage and more.

Our workshop presenter and SCORE Mentor, Karen Brown, is a recently retired CPA with over 30 years of experience; as well as a self-employed business owner for 20 years. Karen built her career by helping business owners comply with federal, state and local reporting requirements

Karen earned an Accounting degree from Ferris State University, a Business degree from Western Michigan and a Masters in Taxation from Grand Valley State University.
