Lighting Essentials Workshop

Most photographers who start off in photography forget (or never know about) one of the most basic and necessary elements of photography: understanding and controlling light.  Here's a few things you will learn from this two-day seminar/workshop:

  • The various types of light and lighting, differences and usage.
  • The many types of light modifiers, and how they affect your image.
  • Creating black hole light (subtractive lighting) with the best effect.
  • Why certain lights make images take on a whole different "feel."
  • How to use additional lighting outside, even in sunlight, with great effect.
  • The use of reflectors in all situations.
  • How to create modeled scenarios that you can use over and over again.
  • How to create drama in your lighting.
  • Using Lightroom to enhance the impact of your lighting!

We are going to use four distinctively different forms of light, all with varying effects.  We'll use several light modifiers to shape, pull, focus, amplify and condition light.  We'll use reflectors of various types, sizes and shapes to do oddly beautiful things to the light you use.  And after we learn everything possible about those lights, we'll use them on live subjects... over and over... until you are comfortable.  Tony Cooper has been teaching art students for years about everything having to do with lighting, studio photography and why images look different when you know what you're doing with the lights.

With a lighting workshop experience like this you can:

  • Gain a definitive knowledge about what lights, modifiers, reflectors, subtractors, and more you will need to add to your gear to handle every situation.
  • Understand the real differences between what a soft box, umbrella and diffusion panel are, and effectively use them properly every time you set them up.
  • Adapt to ever situation, provide exactly what you want to your images, and work more efficiently and safely.
  • Learn that different equipment has multiple uses, and how to use them altogether.
  • Appreciate how to best subtract light from a set, scene or subject.
  • Work with your subject to help them feel at ease while you are moving lights and modifiers around.
  • Smartly build your gear based on what you need now, later and much later on.

No prior knowledge is necessary, but you will need to bring your own camera equipment... if you have remote triggering mechanisms that you prefer to use, please bring them as well.
