We invite you to join us as we honor 2019 Maritime Person of the Year, Captain John O'Keeffe

Captain John O'Keeffe serves as the Director of Marine Affairs US for Ørsted US Offshore Wind, working with marine & maritime stakeholders across all phases of development and operations.  Prior to the merger with Ørsted, John worked as Operations Manager for the Block Island Wind Farm, the first offshore wind farm in the United States.

John sailed worldwide for over a decade as a professional mariner, deck officer, teacher and captain.  He worked for several organizations including Sea Education Association (S.E.A.) based in Wood's Hole, MA and the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) based in St. George's Bermuda.

John currently holds a 1600-ton USCG Ocean Master's license (sail/steam) and earned his BS in Envoronmental Studies from Southern Vermont College and a graduate degree from URI's Marine Affairs program.

The Propeller Club will also be honoring the receipients of the William J. Torpey Memorial Scholarship: Jill Hughes (University of Rhode Island) & Ben Sweeney (University of Rhode Island)

In addition to our honorees, we will also be celebrating National Maritime Day, which is a United States Holiday created by the United States Congress to recognize the maritime industry.  It is observed on May 22nd, the date in 1819 that the American steamship, Savannah, set sail from Savannah, Georgia on the first ever transoceanic voyage under steam power.
