Native Plants and Design

John Magee, Magee Design, Middleburg, Virginia

John is the creator and host of the Native Plant Podcast (nativeplantpodcast.com). John specializes in the use of native plants, but is also known for his work with stone and water. These “earthly” elements combine to create a natural landscape that enhances not only the home of the landscape, but the surrounding area as well.

Building Today’s Landscapes with Grasses and Sedges

Grasses and sedges are building blocks for today’s ecologically sound landscapes. Through vibrant images and speci c examples, Shannon will show how grasses and sedges contribute to better landscapes. You’ll also get best practices for choosing, using
and caring for them.

Jeff Epping is the Director of Olbrich Botanical Gardens, Madison, Wisconsin

At Olbrich Botanical Gardens, Jeff oversees the horticultural operations and garden designs of inspirational display gardens. He and his staff have practiced and preached sustainable gardening for years, and it is re ected in their environmentally friendly cultural practices and innovative award-winning garden designs.

A Season of Inspiration: Nine Months at Chanticleer

Chris Fehlhaber, Horticulturist, Chanticleer Garden, Wayne, Pennsylvania

Chris will share his insider’s view of the inner workings of this complex garden. From the rst ush of spring bulbs to the last gasp of autumn foliage, the garden and its gardeners are always unique and vivacious. A lot happens in a season, from planting bulbs to overwintering tropicals and building Hugelkultur beds; every task comes together to make the magic happen at “America’s Most Inspiring Garden.”

The Power of Four Inches

Carrie Preston, Landscape Designer, Amersfoort, The Netherlands

Carrie, the 2016 Association of Professional Landscape Designers Designer of the Year, is based in Amersfoort, Netherlands where she “designs small gardens that live large.” She was selected to design a garden for the 2017 Philadelphia Flower Show—one that she will install the week after the seminar. In her presentation Carrie will share her strategies for working in compact spaces, starting with a coherent design narrative. She will discuss tactics to make a space feel bigger and work more ef ciently, and show the dramatic effect of how small changes in elevation can have major impact.
