NEFLIN Expert Series 2014: Sue Polanka - Jacksonville (5/29/14)

Understanding the eBook Environment

Have you ever wondered why your library buys eBooks from multiple providers, why some titles are available as eBooks and others aren’t, or why an ebook costs more and has limits on circulation?  It’s all part of the eBook environment.  Publishers, libraries, aggregators, and others in the information industry have all shifted from a print dominated market to an emarket.  With this switch came new formats and technology, new licenses and prices, new publishers and vendors, and new obstacles for end users.  This session will explore the ‘who, what, when, where, and why’ of the public library eBook market, highlighting the legal, ethical, and business aspects of eBooks.  With a greater understanding of the eBook market, troubleshooting the day-to-day questions and frustrations from end users can be much easier.  Join us for a day full of discussion, education, and networking about eBooks.

Expert Facilitator:  Sue Polanka, Head, Reference & Instruction, Wright State University Libraries;                  Moderator, No Shelf Required®

Sue Polanka created the award-winning blog, No Shelf Required®, a blog about the issues surrounding e-books for librarians and publishers. The blog transformed into a book series with ALA Publishing.  Sue is the Head of Reference and Instruction at the Wright State University Libraries in Dayton, Ohio, Past-President of the Academic Library Association of Ohio, and was elected to ALA Council in 2012.  She was named a Library Journal Mover and Shaker in 2011 and named Alumnus of the Year by Kent State University School of Library and Information Science in 2013.  She is co-editor of the new ALA journal, eContent Quarterly.  Sue speaks internationally on the topic of eBooks.
