IMPORTANT: This is a 2-Day workshop that meets on Tuesday, January  24 AND Wednesday, January 25 from 9 am - 4 pm EST each day. You must attend both sessions.

This two-day workshop will provide hands-on training in archival book repair techniques. Students should attend both days for maximum benefit.

Students will learn:

  • Techniques for repairing torn pages and inserting loose pages back into the textblock
  • Skills for tightening loose book hinges
  • How to strengthen a torn spine
  • How to sew a pamphlet into a binder
  • Techniques to replace damaged endpapers
  • How to reattach a text block to the cover
  • How to replace a damaged spine and reattach the cover

Students will learn how a book is constructed, why they are damaged, and how to repair books for lasting use.  We will discuss sources of supplies and how to create a book repair area.

Participants will take home a repair kit of supplies valued at over $80.00!

Students should bring:

  • Sharp scissors
  • 8 oz. measuring cup for liquids
  • Measuring spoons
  • Small whisk or fork
  • A self-healing cutting mat (Mats will be available for use during the class if you don’t have one.)

Students may bring 3-4 hard cover books needing repair, but practice books will be provided.

Bring a bib-type apron and/or wear old clothes as one of the glues we are using is difficult to remove from clothing.  Wear comfortable shoes as some participants may choose to stand while practicing the repair techniques.
