Recommending the Best Educational, Diverse, and Accessible Podcasts for Library Users

Helping library users find and use the best podcasts is a good service offering for libraries because it’s an important part of today’s digital literacies.

Podcasts are flourishing these days, and we’ll look at how and why they are becoming more popular. We’ll discuss where and why people listen, how podcasts are being used in educational settings, and the advantages of audio podcasts for people with visual disabilities.

You’ll learn how to find the best podcasts, by using new directories, specialized newsletters and alerts, and podcast search tools.

We’ll point you resources that list some of the best podcasts for diverse audiences and different age levels. You’ll also learn about podcast listening apps and which kinds of features are most useful in these apps. We’ll touch upon the future of podcasting and end with ideas for how librarians can curate podcasts for their users.

Virtual Trainer: Nicole Hennig

Nicole Hennig is an independent user-experience professional, helping librarians and educators effectively use mobile technologies.

Nicole’s books include Apps for Librarians: Using the Best Mobile Technology to Educate, Create, and Engage, Selecting and Evaluating the Best Mobile Apps for Library Services, and Best Apps for Academics. She teaches several online courses, including Apps for Librarians & Educators, and Organize Your Life with Mobile Apps.

She worked for the MIT Libraries for 14 years, first as web manager and then as head of the user experience department. She is the winner of several awards, including the MIT Excellence Award for Innovative Solutions.
