Copyright - Identifying & Addressing Issues for Digitization: 2-Part Webinar (06/8 and 06/15/17)

IMPORTANT: This is a 2-part webinar that meets on Thursdays, June 8th and June 15th, from 10 am - 12 noon each day. You will register once to attend both sessions.

Digitizing Specific Collections and Archives

The ability to digitize entire subsets of collections allows libraries, museums, and similar entities to fulfill their missions to a degree well beyond any they have previously been able to do.  Mass digitization provides a powerful tool both to preserve valuable collections and to share unique and difficult-to-obtain materials with interested audiences outside of the facility in which they physically reside.  Many of these collections, however, contain works still protected by copyright.

In this interactive series, you will learn to identify, assess, and address the challenges copyright presents to mass digitization projects, including evaluating fair use in such situations, dealing with orphan works, assessing risk, and obtaining permission.

Virtual Trainer: Gretchen McCord, Digital Information Law

Gretchen McCord is an attorney and librarian, focusing on intellectual property in digital formats. Previously an academic librarian, she practiced law for 9 years before starting her legal advising and training consultancy. She has taught as an adjunct at both university and community college levels in the areas of copyright, privacy, trademark, and First Amendment law. A frequent speaker, she is the author of Copyright in Cyberspace: Questions and Answers for Librarians, What You Need to Know About Privacy Law: A Guide for Librarians and Educators, and Fair Use: The Secrets No One Tells You.

This is an online class. Access information will be emailed one week ahead.
