Quick and Easy Book Repairs for Circulating Collections - NEFLIN (08/01/17)

Many library books need a quick repair to get them back into circulation as soon as possible.  Students will learn easy and low cost book repair techniques.  The class will provide hands training in repairing torn pages, tightening book hinges, strengthening a torn spine and other skills.  Students will learn how to cover a paperback book, how to sew a pamphlet into a protective cover, and how to protect a dust jacket.

The class will not teach archival book repair, but we will discuss the different kinds of repair and when each technique is appropriate.  We will learn about supply sources and how to set up a book repair area.

Students will receive glue, tape, and other book repair materials to take back to their library.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Acquire the skill to repair common problems of damaged library books.
  • Understand the difference between a “quick fix” and an archival repair.
  • Understand the different qualities of book repair glues, tapes and other materials.

Target audience:  Public and school librarians, staff, and volunteers.  Anyone responsible for book processing and repair is welcome to attend.

Students should bring:

  • Regular scissors (6-8" blade)
  • Small scissors (2-3" blade)
  • Self-healing cutting mat (mats will be provided if you do not have one)
  • 2-3 hard cover books needing repair - other practice books will be provided
