Some people think that life comes easier to those of status, wealth, or celebrity. Doors open and people seem eager to say yes. But what about the rest of us? Is it possible to be influential without position, fortune, or fame?
Positive influence is about building rapport, being clear about your goals, understanding the other person's goals, and finding ways to satisfy both parties. It's about making sincere and specific gratitude and praise a habit with everyone.
Positive influence, also called positive reinforcement, works well with the people you interact with in your library as well as in your personal life. It can turn around the recalcitrant teenage page, the seemingly hostile library user, and the critical elected official. It also can have a positive impact on those observing your interactions with others. But, it requires paying attention to the good and staying calm and alert regardless of the other's person's behavior.
Topics include explaining two models of influence and practical tips and examples about how to apply the principles to real-life situations in your library.
