DBT Skills for Social Workers, Counselors, and Therapists

The Tulane School of Social Work is proud to present a 3-hour CEU workshop by Dr. Marvin Clifford entitled "DBT skills for social workers, counselors, and therapists". The workshop will be held at the Tulane School of Social Work, located at 127 Elk Place, on Saturday, Dec. 2. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with the program starting at 10 a.m. and ending at 1:15 p.m.  

The five DBT skill areas will be presented with case examples, practice time, and ways these are helpful for a wide variety of clients.  The skill areas are mindfulness, self soothing skills, emotional regulation, interpersonal relationships, and the middle path.  The teaching style will be didactic, case example, experiential, and video.  

The focus will be for professionals to learn skills that will help them be more effective with their clients.  DBT skills can be used with a variety of clients and in a wide range of practice settings.  Skills can be integrated into existing theoretical frameworks and practice syles.  A handful will be provided.

Learning Goals

  • Partiipants will learn the 5 basic DBT skills and be able to apply these with their clients.
  • Participants will learn to apply DBT skills with a wide variety of clients in many clinical settings.
  • Participants will be able to discuss when and when not to use DBT skills.
  • Participants will learn how to integrate DBT skills into their own existing styles of therapy.

About the Presenter
Dr. Marvin Clifford has been with the  Ochsner Health System for over 27 years.   He is the Director of Group Therapy and the Director of EAP.  He has over 48 years of experience as a mental health professional and specializes in groups, children, couples, adolescents, families, adults, addictions, and co-occuring disorders. He also does supervision, publications, teaching and presentations all over the country.  He has been  a member of the part-time faculty with Tulane School of Social Work for 26 years. He has alot of training and experience with various models of therapy including DBT.

Registration Fees and Payment
The registration fee is $60. Please fill out the online form to register. Payments can be made via credit card or via check or money order (payable to Tulane School of Social Work). If you pay by check, payment should be mailed immediately after completing the online registration form. Your registration is NOT complete until we have received your payment.  Please mail your payment to:

Please fill out the registration form.  Your final registration is predicated on receiving your payment. Once your payment is received, you will receive an e-mail confirming your registration into the program, and you will be guaranteed a spot at the workshop.

CANCELLATION POLICY -- In the event you cannot come to our program, it is important for you to notify us at least 24 hours before before the program begins, either by email (preferred) at psternbe@tulane.edu or via phone at 504-231-6618.  We will refund the registration fee if cancelationis received at least 24 hours prior to program start.

The Tulane School of Social Work is located at 127 Elk Place. Please see the location map.

You can enter the school via the 2nd floor skywalk from the Saratoga Parking Garage, located at 111 S. Saratoga St. To find the skywalk, go to the second floor elevator lobby, walk into the parking garage and follow the yellow posts to the skywalk. Once you enter the Elk Place building, go down the hall to the elevators and take them to the third floor.
