Workshop Description

This 4-hour training for school staff and othe rocmmunity professionals addresses the needs of youth in highly distressed situations, including foster care, probation, homeless, children of prisoners, and youth involved with behavioral or mental health systems.  If provides a nuanced view of their needs and a better understanding of strategies and considerations for culturally responsive practice.  It addresses how trauma affects youth development and risk behaviors and how to provide trauma-informed care.  It guides participants to a better understand of how environmental factors like child maltreatment can lead to substance use disorders and other risk behaviors.  Lastly, it helps participants develop hands-on conversational skills and response strategies for supporting youth when difficult issues arise.

DUSTIANNE NORTH, Ph.D.

Dustianne has worked in the fields of youth prevention, mentoring, mental health, development, and empowerment since 1995.  Dr. North has provided training and technical assistance for a variety of youth and family programs nationwide, and she has developed mental health curriculum and programjming for community colleges throughout California.  Projects have ranged from the small and grassroots to large scale collaboratives and coalitions.  She specializes in working iwth youth in highly distressed situations (foster care, probation, homeless, children of prisoners.) 

Her scholarly work in Social welfare at UCLA allows her to implement effective research to practice efforts, evidence-based services, program evaluation and qualitative reserach methodologies (grounded theory, case study, analytic induction; network analysis, participatory action research).  Dr. North is a community organizer, practicitioner, and scholar with a commitment to emancipatory youth and family services.  Her diverse scope of knowledge covers direct practice issues such as communicating with youth, mezzo-level program design and organizational development, interagency parterships, and community organizing and mobilization.
