#1 Alabama vs Mercer Game Watch Party

The Tide continues to Roll, returning to Bryant Denny this weekend to tame the Mercer Bears.

Mercer is seeing the return of several of their star players, including QB Harrison Frost. The 6'1, 195lbs Junior out of Georgia is nothing to scoff at, with 2020 completion rate of 59.7%, though for a modest 354 yards.

Mercer Head Coach Drew Cronic, out of Sharpsburg, GA, traces his football roots to offense and special teams. Having played QB under his father, Danny Cronic, in high school, Drew Cronic changed gears slightly on the collegiate level. Adapting his skills at UGA to become a wide receiver and member of the special teams, Cronic lettered twice and participated in the 1995 Peach Bowl and 1997 Outback Bowl.

After taking on the head coaching job in 2019, Cronic brought the Bears out of a 3-8 season in 2017 to a 25-3 record over the next two seasons. Named AFCA National Coach of the Year in 2018, Cronic is responsible for the Bears having a record-tying 13 wins in 2019 and 2 consecutive berths in the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Like Coach Saban, Coach Cronic focuses on the importance of bettering his players on the field and in the classroom, encouraging the team to a 3.0 grade-point-average for the first time in program history.

Fun Facts:

  1. The Mercer Bears were originally named the Mercer Baptists until 1924.
  2. Mercer's football program had a start similar to the 4pm traffic on hwy 190...stop and go. Though the football team started in 1891, Mercer did nto consistently field teams until 1906. However the program was dropped in 1917-18 during World War I, resumed after the end of the war. Then dropped again after 1941 after the US entered World War II. This time, however, the Bears did not return to the field until 2013, a 72 years hiatus! Could you imagine!!!

We'll see you at Coscino's Italian Grill on Saturday, September 11. Kick-off is at 3:00, but please plan to arrive at 2:30. You'll see the Sanctuary Room just inside the door to the left of the hostess stand.

Roll Tide!
