The Ethics of a Trauma Informed Approach 

Does operating from a trauma informed perspective pose unique ethical considerations? This workshop explores the elements of a trauma informed approach and how they influence the environment of care and the work of individual practitioners.

  • Review SAMHSA’s trauma informed approach and ways these apply in behavioral healthcare settings.
  • Understand competencies needed for effective trauma informed work.
  • Discuss the complex influences of race, culture, gender and religion on exposure to and interpretation of trauma.
  • Reflect on personal experience and its influence on our work with individuals who have experienced trauma.
  • Learn strategies for self-care that promote health and well-being.

About the presenter:

Dory Lawrence has over 20 years of experience in management, program development, facilitation, and professional development.  She holds a Master’s degree in Educational and Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia.  She is currently the Manager of Training at Oaklawn Psychiatric Center.  Her prior experience includes directing a grant funded program aimed at mitigating the impact of trauma on youth, facilitating a community –wide trauma awareness initiative, serving as program director for a statewide educational advocacy organization, and managing staff development in a behavioral healthcare setting.  Dory has spoken at state, regional and national conferences.
