Loving Your Incarcerated Neighbor

Join us to explore how faith communities can support those re-entering society after incarceration at our morning seminar, “Loving Our Incarcerated Neighbor,”  featuring Cory and Shannan Martin of Goshen. The Martins will share their personal journey of becoming servant-advocates for incarcerated people, which began with their son Robert. The seminar will explore false presumptions about incarceration, practical ways to serve those who are incarcerated or re-entering society and building relationships, with special focus on boundaries, burn-out and including your children in this ministry. Representatives from local organizations who serve incarcerated or formerly incarcerated people will also be on hand to share information about their services and ways to get involved.

About the speakers

Shannan Martin is the best-selling author of “The Ministry of Ordinary Places:   Waking Up to God’s Goodness Around You” and “Falling Free: Rescued from the   Life I Always Wanted”. Shannan shares her daily thoughts and wisdom with over   30,000 Instagram followers encouraging us to love where God has planted us and   live connected and meaningful lives. She is a tireless advocate for her community,   living in an under-resourced neighborhood in Goshen, and invests deeply in the   lives of people around her.

Cory Martin is Chaplain for Jail Ministry of Elkhart County, a non-profit organization   that provides opportunities for spiritual growth and discipleship to inmates at the   Elkhart County Jail through Bible studies, church services, free tattoo removal and   affordable housing opportunities post-release.The organization has more than 18   Assistant Chaplains and 400 volunteers from 100 churches. He is former   development director for The Crossing Educational Center and a former   congressional aide for Chris Chocola and Mark Souder.

Cory and Shannan met at Bethel College and worked in Washington, D.C., before moving to Wakarusa, where they bought the white farm house they’d always dreamed of and focused on raising their family. As they began to feel God calling them to give up the life they had envisioned, they quit politics, sold the farmhouse and moved to Goshen with their three children. Now, they live as grateful neighbors, building friendships and serving with the people near them.
