5th Annual
M2D2 $100K Challenge 2016

The University of Massachusetts' Medical Device Development Center (M2D2) is pleased to launch the 5th Annual M2D2 $100K Challenge, an opportunity designed to showcase the innovative ideas and entrepreneurial spirit of seed and early-stage medical device companies. The M2D2 $100K Challenge Program is sponsored in partnership with BD, Boston Scientific, MPR Product Development, Mintz Levin, Omni Components and R&Q (Regulatory & Quality Solutions).  

The M2D2 $100K Challenge will award up to $100,000 in service or grant awards provided by the program sponsors.  Applicants from across the nation and beyond are invited to participate, but should clearly indicate their intent to leverage the resources provided as awards in the competition.
 
Last year, this event was attended by more than 200 representatives from local venture capital firms, angel investors and service firms, allowing attendees to receive informal feedback and develop relationships with these key supports for early stage companies.  

The M2D2 $100K Challenge is interested in receiving a broad range of applications and is seeking any biotech and medical device technologies. 
 
Applicants receive coaching and finalists are invited to present at a Showcase Event on March 23 at UMass Lowell Moloney Hall.  
 
Who is Eligible
The Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center - M2D2 $100K challenge is open to medical device technology-based and biotech startup businesses. The venture must involve the development of a new biotech, diagnostic and medical device technologies.

Competition Details and Deadlines

The M2D2 $100K Challenge will award valuable in-kind mentoring and development services  provided by the program sponsors to selected finalist companies.  Applicants from across the nation and beyond are invited to participate, but should clearly indicate their intent to leverage the resources provided as awards in the competition.

  • First Round: Entries are due by 5:00p.m., Sunday, February 7, 2016 (late submission will not be accepted)

Entry Applications and executive summaries must be submitted via email to M2D2@uml.edu by 5 p.m. Sunday, February 7, 2016. Applications are available by way of the link to the left.   Applicants will be judged by a team of medical device experts. Application Fees: until February 7, 2016: $50.00.

Finalists will be chosen from the pool of applicants and notified by Wednesday, March 2, 2016.

  • Second Round: Detailed Applications are due on Friday, March 11, 2016 and applicants who advance to this round will give presentations on Wednesday, March 23, 2016
The finalists also will be required to present before a panel of expert judges at M2D2 on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 beginning at 6:00 p.m. at UMass Lowell University Crossing, Moloney Hall, 220 Pawtucket Street, Lowell MA. The presentations will be a maximum of 5 minutes (4 minute presentation, 1 minute Q&A).
  • Winner's Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, April 6, 2016.

The winners and award amounts will be announced on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at the Mintz Levin PC offices located at One Financial Place, Boston MA.
