The Stuttering Evolution Group is a brand new type of group therapy that combines traditional practices of acceptance within pws and adds an interactive therapy format. Participants will identify goals for their evolution.
In meeting #3 James shared his plan for talking with customers and fellow staff at a new restaurant job. It is common for pws to develop word fears and/or avoidance tricks; but not for James! Chang practiced his Toastmasters Ice Breaker speech in front of the group. Toastmasters is a great organization for pws to break through fear.
The format of #4 is to inventory avoidance tricks and leave behind as we go into 2019. A quote I learned is "Attention follows intention." If my intention is to conceal my stutter, I create a web of tricks (i.e., word changing, pointing to menu for the server to say it for me). Emancipation from stuttering requires dismantling avoidance tricks. Yes it has been done and can be done.
