Most Westerners try unsuccessfully to understand current conflicts between Christians and Muslims within the framework of recent secular assumptions. However, these conflicts fit into well-established historical trends that are alluded to often by Muslims but seldom by others. To end these cycles of conflict, we need to understand our history.
