 Workshop Descriptions

9:35 am - 11:00 am  Coaching during Ongoing Professional Development: Best Practices to Make the Biggest Difference with Dr. Dana Childress

  • “Coaching” is a buzz word in professional development (PD) now, but what does it really look like in practice? Join this session to learn about best practices for using coaching in the context of ongoing PD. We’ll explore Dunst’s (2015) model of evidence-informed PD for early childhood providers and discuss how coaching fits in. We’ll also discuss specific strategies for coaching others that are grounded in adult learning theory. These strategies emphasize active participation, reflection, self-assessment, and ongoing support during and after training to help participants develop a deeper understanding of what they do and why they do it.

11:15 am - 12:30 pm Learning Communities with Kim Thomason

  • This workshop will be a hands on opportunity to explore the important role of learning communities in adult education.  Participants will use materials, photos, and small group discussion to contemplate how to form and facilitate learning communities. By the end of the session participants will be able to identify the practices of facilitating learning communities as well as the process of using the thinking lens for reflection with their participants.

1:30 pm - 3:00 pm Extending Your PD Reach: Professional Development Strategies that Help Change Clasroom Practices with Dr. Carol Trivett

  • This presentation will describe an evidence-based approach to professional development that will help deliver strong knowledge content and make changes in classroom practices. During this session, participants will discuss strategies they use to extend the impact of their PD on classroom practices; as well as help create and assess new strategies.
