Speaker Bios

Angela Anderson, Director, Customer Outreach, Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy

Angela Anderson leads customer outreach and engagement efforts on behalf of the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, ensuring leading food chain customers are aware of, connected with and supportive of the dairy industry-wide social responsibility plan. From fostering relationships to identifying synergies for partnership, Anderson works with major dairy customers to help them understand dairy’s vital role in helping their organizations meet their corporate social responsibility goals. Additionally, Anderson works closely with the National Milk Producers Federation, to highlight the National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Program to dairy customers.

Prior to joining the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, Anderson worked for the National Pork Board as the manager of food chain outreach and channel communications focused on building customer partnerships around the subject matter of animal care, environmental stewardship, food safety and nutrition. Anderson additionally worked for the Iowa FFA Foundation as the FFA enrichment center director and for the University of Minnesota as an academic advisor for agricultural education.

Anderson holds a bachelor’s degree in public service and administration in agriculture from Iowa State University and a master of arts in educational leadership and policy from the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Amy Johnson, DNP, FNP-C

Dr. Amy Johnson, DNP, FNP-C was raised on a beef cattle and sheep farm in a rural area of Virginia. Following high school, she obtained an Animal Science degree from Virginia Tech, followed by an Associate’s Degree in Emergency Health Services-Paramedic and an Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Jefferson College of Health Sciences. She completed her BSN at Radford University and after working in the emergency room and as a forensic nurse, completed her Doctorate of Nursing Practice at Radford University in 2013. Her graduate research was in raising awareness of agricultural injuries and preventing on-farm accidents. She attended the Agricultural Medicine Course through East Carolina University and is a certified Agri-Safe Provider. She currently works as a Family Nurse Practitioner for Centra Medical Group. 

She serves as President of Bedford County Farm Bureau, President of the Lynchburg Region of the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners and Medical Advisor to the Board of Directors for Moneta Rescue Squad. In 2017, she was recognized as Advanced Practice Provider of the Year for Bedford Memorial Hospital and in 2018 as Lady Leader for Virginia Farm Bureau. She is an active member of the American Farm Bureau Federation Grassroots Outreach (GO) Team.  She frequently speaks to groups on farm safety, the importance of preventative health care in agriculture, GMO’s, and advocates for agriculture on the state and national level. She lives with her husband and two children on their family farm where they grow wheat, soybeans and hay.

Dr. Jack Britt

Dr. Jack Britt is a teacher, scientist, executive and entrepreneur. As a young man, he was part of a family dairy farm. His family’s Kentucky dairy farm was the first one to have an elevated milking parlor in the county in 1953. Dr. Britt earned a B.S. in agriculture and biology at Western Kentucky University and a Ph.D. in physiology and biochemistry at North Carolina State University. Britt served as a faculty member and leader at Michigan State University, North Carolina State University and The University of Tennessee System. 

He has authored 620 scientific and technical publications and has made invited presentations at 97 international conferences in 22 countries. Britt is a founder, co-founder or early partner in five companies and has served on boards of directors of several multi-national companies as well as many non-profit organizations.

Today Dr. Britt leads a team of nine dairy professionals who project and investigate what dairy farming around the world will be like in 50 years. This effort began in August of 2015 and the team regularly modifies their projections.

Eva Balazs, Maola Director of Marketing 

Eva Balazs has over 15 years of experience in consumer packaged goods marketing. In her current role as Director of Marketing at Maryland & Virginia, she is in charge of all aspects of marketing the Maola brand. Previously, as Director of Marketing and Contract Sales at Perry's Ice Cream, she managed brand marketing, strategic sponsorships, social media, public relations, and the company’s contract manufacturing business. Eva also worked at Upstate Niagara Cooperative in Buffalo, developing and implementing marketing programs for the Upstate Farms, Bison, and Intense Milk brands. She served on the board of directors for the Milk Processor Education/Marketing Program (MilkPEP/got milk?) during this time. She also worked with Dairy Management, Inc., as a member of the Health and Wellness task force team, looking at consumer perceptions of various dairy products and future opportunities for dairy. Eva earned her Master of Arts degree in Integrated Marketing Communications from St. Bonaventure University and also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Medaille College. 

 Dr. MaryAnne Drake

Dr. Drake is a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor in the Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences, North Carolina State University where she conducts research on the flavor and flavor chemistry of foods. Her research is focused on understanding how processing steps influence flavor and consumer perception of foods. Dr, Drake has published more than 250 peer-reviewed manuscripts and given more than 300 invited industry presentations. She is the Past President of the American Dairy Science Association, the Director of the Southeast Dairy Foods Research Center and the Director of the NC State Sensory Services Center. Dr. Drake is also an ADSA and IFT Fellow.

Jeremy Daubert, VA Cooperative Extension Agent

Jeremy Daubert is the Unit Coordinator and Extension Agent for Dairy in the Shenandoah Valley. Since joining the Virginia Cooperative Extension in 2013, he has actively coordinated educational programs and resources for dairy farmers. Prior to working in extension, Jeremy was a herd manager at several dairy farms and operated his own dairy farm from 2004 to 2011. He and his wife, Becky, and their two children enjoy showing their registered animals at local and regional shows.

Seven Oaks Farm, Lynchburg, Virginia

The 450-cow dairy is owned by Carter Elliott of Lynchburg, Virginia. He and his family farm a total of 1,800 acres of owned and rented ground to raise crops for their herd. In addition to their milking string, they raise about 1,000 heifers.

Carter’s grandfather started the farm 125 years ago with two milk cows. Today cows at Seven Oaks are milked in a double 12 Boumatic parlor built in 1995. Cows are housed in freestalls and bedded pack barns.

Prior to buying the farm in 1978 from his father, Carter was a principal at a local high school.
